Raptor Protectors aim to protect both birds of
prey and the delicate habitat of the Preserve.
The Springs Preserve, NV Energy and Nevada Community Foundation have partnered to protect both wild birds of prey and the delicate habitat of the Preserve by purchasing and installing devices collectively known as "Raptor Protectors" on power poles bisecting the Preserve.
These Raptor Protectors comprise a two-part system designed to prevent large raptors, such as the Great Horned Owl, Peregrine Falcon and Turkey Vulture, from using the poles as perches, and protect them if they get too close to power lines. Because of the birds' large wing spans, their take-off from such perches can result in their electrocution and death, as well as potentially set the surrounding habitat afire as a result of the fall.
Raptor Protectors' perch guards prevent these birds from using the poles as perches in the first place. As well, a second device clamped to the wires – black, white and red "flappers" – warn birds of the wires' presence and prevent high-speed collisions with the power lines.
