Las Vegas Farmers Market

Sustainable living doesn't have to be costly or difficult. Actor and long-time environmentalist Ed Begley, Jr. offers the following simple tips for going green in his newly published book, "Living Like Ed: A Guide to the Eco-Friendly Life." Mr. Begley will sign copies of the book at the Springs Preserve Gift Shop on Monday, May 12, from 4 to 5 p.m.

  • Ditch the dirty air filter – central air systems must work harder to suck air through a dirty filter.
  • Run only full dishwasher loads and save water as well as energy.
  • Walk or ride a bike to reach close-by locations.
  • Buy bulk – less packaging mean less waste. Take one more step and bring a canvas bag with you to the market.
  • Compost – it keeps organic waste out of landfills, makes free fertilizer and a great water-saving mulch.
  • Reduce electric consumption during peak hours – 1 to 7 p.m. (sign up for the time-of-use rate program at Nevadapower.com)
  • Choose foods grown locally (Find organic options grown regionally at the Las Vegas Farmers Market at the Preserve each Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.).
  • Wear clothes made from organic contents such as cotton, silk or wool.
  • Choose natural skin and hair care products free from paraben and petroleum-based ingredients

Meet Mr. Begley and learn more about eco-friendly living at the Springs Preserve May 12.
