The Healing the Heart exhibition was created out of a love for Too-veep (the lands). The care of our shared environment is at the heart of the show, where artists answer the call about their relationship to our Mother Earth. Healing the Heart is a community exploration of plant ecology that centers Indigenous perspectives and holds space for local artists to ask the question: How can we connect with plant medicines, traditions, and cultural practices that involve Mother Earth in a changing urban landscape? The resulting work operates at the intersection of community care and care for the land, drawing from sources spanning traditional teachings, experiences in nature, literature, and more. Healing the Heart celebrates the power of plants to not only treat ailments of the body, but also to heal the spirit and nourish the soul.
The exhibition is curated by Fawn Douglas, an Indigenous American artist, activist, mother, and an enrolled member of the Las Vegas Paiute Tribe. She also has roots with the Moapa Paiute, Southern Cheyenne, Creek, Pawnee, and Scottish. Fawn is the manager and creative director of Nuwu Art, which includes the Nuwu Art Studios and Nuwu Art Gallery + Community Center, located in the heart of Las Vegas, Nevada. Her practice is dedicated to the intersections of art, activism, community, education, culture, identity, place, and sovereignty. Within her art-making, Fawn tells stories in order to remember the past and to ensure the stories of Indigenous peoples are heard in the present.
